Moose (ALCES MACHLIS or PALM AT US)

It ranges through n. Ru ia and in Canada, as far s. as Maine. It is short-bodied and long-legged, has a prominent convex nasal ridge, long ears, and two-branched palmated horns, which have a spread of 4 ft. Moose ( Alces palm at us ). and may weigh 70 lbs. These are not fully formed until the third year, and are cast in Dec. and renewed from April to June. The pelage consists of long, coarse hair and fine wool. The hide makes excellent leather for moccasins. They feed on shoots and leaves, the prominent upper-lip not being adapted IMG:content-1430.png:[blocks in formation]
