Grosbeak

(grōs'beek,) or GROSS BEAK. (Zool.) Aname common to several species of birds, belonging to the genera Hes per if on a,Guiraca, and Cardi-Grouse, na lis, family Fringillidæ. They Grove, are distinguished by a strong and thick bill,by means of which they are enabled to break the stones of cherries and other fruit with the greatest facility. The CardinalG.,also called Cardinal bird, Card in a les Virginia nus (Fig. 366), which is met with in several parts of the U. States, is 8inches in length, and its general plumage is a fine red. Its song very much resembles that Gruel, of the nightingale. Fig. 366. [s. 427]
