Celebes

(sèl'e-bez,) an island of the Eastern Archipelago, extending from Lat. 2° N. to nearly 6° S., and from Lon. 119 ° to 125° E., bounded N. by the Sea of Celebes, W. the Strait of Maca ar, E. the Molucca and Pitt's Pa ages,and S. the Sea of Flores. Estim, area, 75,000 sq. m. Its shores are deeply indented by the sea, and its surface consists almost entirely of plains affording good pasture. Prod. Rice, maize, cotton, ca ava, tobacco. C. is divided into 2 states those of Boni and Maca ar. C. was colonized by the Portuguese in 1512; in 1660, the Dutch took po e ion of it. Fort Rotter dam, the principal Dutch settlement, is in Maca ar, and most of the aboriginal tribes are their subordinates. Pop. 1,800,000. [s. 157]
