—1. Any material used to pack, fill up, or make close; as, the substance around the piston of a pump or other tube, to render it water or air tight, 2. The cotton waste, used to fill journal boxes, which saturates with oil and holds it against the bearing. 3. A term colloquially applied to the thin sheets of ma terial used for jointing flanges, etc.
