Mattoon, Stephen

D.D. (Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 1870), Presbyterian; b. at Champion, N.Y., May 5, 1816; graduated at Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 1842, and at Princeton Theological Seminary, N.J., 1846; was mi ionary of the Presbyterian Board of Foreign Mi ions in Siam, 1846-66; pastor at Ballston Spa, N. Y., 1867-69; from 1870 till 1884 was president of Biddle Memorial Institute (now Biddie University), Charlotte, N.C., and since 1877 profe or of systematic theology in its theological department. He completed the translation of the New Testament into Siamese in 1865, and it was printed that year complete at the Presbyterian Mi ion Pre at Bangkok, Siam: portions had been printed earlier as they were finished.
