[In Fr. barille Sp. barrilla.] The ash of sea-weeds and plants, as Salsola soda, which grow on the sea-side. It is prepared on the coast of Spain, and was formerly the chief source of sodium carbonate. ( Brande.) barilla de cobre (copper barilla). The commercial name for native copper brought from Bolivia. The species feed upon the dead parts of trees. Baris lignarius preys both in the larva and the perfect state on the elm.
