Shadow

(shad'ō.) (Optics.) A privation or diminution of light, by the interposition of an opaque body. S. differs from shade, as the latter implies no particular form, or definite limit; whereas a S. represents in form the object which intercepts the light; as, the S. of aman, of a tower, . -Shading, or Shadowing. (Paint.) The art of duly representing light and shade in a picture. [s. 818]
