ATTORNEY GENERAL

a member of the Cabinet of the United States, who resides over the Department of Justice. His function is to furnish legal advice needed by the Federal authorities and carry on all litigation which arises from a breach of Federal legislation. He also recommends persons to fill the places of the judges of the United States Circuit and District courts. Each State has an officer of this title whose functions are ractically the same as those of the Froderal official. In England the Attorney-General is the highest legal functionary, permanently retained at a salary to eee the part of the Court in any suit affecting the public interests.
