Aromatic

(ar-o-māt'ik.) [As above.] Noting plants or other bodies which yield a brisk, fragrant smell, and a warm spicy taste, as cloves, cardamom-seeds, cinnamon, nutmegs, . The peculiar qualities of aromatic plants reside in a volatile oil, usually called e ential oil, and in a gro er resinous substance, capable of being extracted by spirit of wine. Aromatics, considered as medicines, warm the stomach, and by degrees the whole system, raise the pulse, and quicken the circulation: hence, in cold languid cases, they increase strength and promote the natural secretions.
