PAUL FRANÇOIS JEAN NICOLAS, COUNT DE, (bar'ras,) am ember of the French Directory, B. in Provence, 1755. After pursuing a brief military career, he Joined the Jacobin Club, and in 1792 was chosen deputy| to the National Convention, of which he afterwards became president. B. took a leading part in the revolution of the 9th Thermidor (July, 1794); was named general-in-chief to oppose the sections on the 13th Vendémiaire (Oct., 1795); and was name done of the 5 Directors. His influence was very great, and continued till the a umption of supreme power by Napoleon as First Consul in Nov., 1799. D. 1829. [s. 75]
