ACTINOMYCOSIS

(STREP TO TRICHOSIS), chronic infectious disease of cattle and of men caused by the streptothriz actinomyces and allied organisms. The region of the mouth and jaw is the commonest site of a.; in animals there are tumor-like ma es of granulation ti ue; and in man there is usually swelling and chronic suppuration; it may spread to the lungs, brain, and other internal organs. Treatment is to remove affected’ ti ues by operation; X-rays and pota ium iodide are used where this is impo ible.
