An acid substance of uncertain composition obtained by heating benzoin (Ist def.) with nitric acid. It occurs as a whitish amorphous powder, of aromatic, peiduious, bitter taste, soluble in alcohol, ether, and in boiling water. BENZOGLYCOLLATE, n. Be?nz-o-glik‘o?l-lat. Ger,, Benzoësäure. It.,acido benzoico. A monobasic aromatic acid, C,H,.CO.0H = C,H4O,, occurring native in various resins, especially fn benzoin, and also prepared synthetically in a variety of ways. It is usually obtained in commerce from its derivative, hippuric acid, contained in the urine of the Herbivora. It forms lustrous, colorle acicular or foliate crystals, which have an acidulous, biting taste, and, when obtained by sublimation, usually an agreeable aromatic odor. It is soluble in 200 parts of cold and in 24 of boiling water, and readily soluble in alcohol and in ether, The Fr. Cod. distinguishes two varieties: b. a. by sublimation and &. a. oy the wet way (see ACIDE BENZoÏqUE). [B.]—B. alcohol. See BENzyL alcohol.—B. aldehyde. Fr., aldéhyde benzoique. Ger., Benzaldehyd. It., aldeide benzoic a. Syn.: benzaldehyde. A substance, C,H,.COH = C,H,O, contained, together with hyarocyanie acid ‘and the concrete substance called benzoin in crude volatile oil of bitter almonds, and constituting by itself the ported oil of bitter almonds. It may also be errnerer artificial ‘rom toluene, It is a colorle , highly refracting liquid, of a peeuliar but pleasant aromatic odor and a burning taste, of a sp. gr. from 1°043 to 1°050, boiling at 180°C. It is soluble in 30 parts of water, and mixes in all proportions with alcohol and with ether. [B, 4,5.]—B. anhydride. Fr., anhydride benzoique.
