The Scottish court of the Lyon king-at-arms (q. v.). Lyon king - at (or of ) arms : Her.: An official in Scotland, deriving his title from the lion rampant, the armorial bearings of the Scottish kings. He has authority to inspect the arms and ensigns-armorial of all noblemen and gentlemen in the kingdom, to distinguish the arms of the younger branches of families, and to give proper arms to those entitled to bear them, to matriculate such arms, and to fine those who bear arms which are not matriculated.
