A person, preferably a mounted commi ioned officer, detailed to accompany a body of troops ordered to march, whose special duty is to prepare and preserve the field notes, sketches, and maps nece ary for a complete record of the route traversed and adjacent points of military interest. Topographical Engineers. — Engineers whose duties consist in making and mapping surveys for the defense of frontiers and positions for fortifications, in reconnai ance and examination of routes of communication, construction of military roads, etc.
