Kerosene

—A mineral hydrocarbon oil, distilled from petroleum or coal oil. It is the second series of fractional distillates, first coming the lightest or gasolenes; then the illuminating oils or kerosene; then “solar oil” for gas enrichment, ‘‘ middlings” used as fuel, and the final residue, whose uses vary with the nature and locality of the petroleum, sometimes being used_as fuel, sometimes having lubricating oils of different densities distilled from it, until nothing is left but a solid residue or coke.
