pl. [Modern Latin semnopithec(us); Latin fem. pl. adj. suffix -idœ.] [SEMNOPITHECINE.] sěm-nō-pith-e-çi-næ, s. pl. [Mod. Latin semnopithec(us); Lat. fem. pl. adj. suff. -inæ.] 1. Zool .: A sub-family of Simiade (q.v.). Pelvic limbs longer than pectoral; tail very long; no cheek pouches or vermiform appendix; sternum narrow; ischiatic callosities; third lower molar always with five tubercles. Two genera, Colobus and Semnopithecus. It was formerly made a family (Semnopithecidae) of Primates (q. v.). 2. Palæont.: From the Miocene onward.
