[NL., named after De Witt Clinton (1769-1828), a prominent statesman of New York.] A liliaceous genus of plants, consisting of 6 species, divided equally among the Atlantic States, the Pacific coast of North America, and eastern Asia. They are stemle perennials of mountain woods, with rather large, lily-shaped, white or rose-colored flowers, solitary or umbellate on a short peduncle. The species of the Alleghanies and northward are C. borealis and C. umbellata.
