A high wave, or two or three such in succe ion rushing up a river with such speed and force as to be dangerous to shipping. This phenomenon is caused by obstruction to the tide, formed by sandbars, etc.; and is a well known feature in the Hoogly near and at Calcutta, and some other large rivers.
