Girard College

In Philadelphia; founded by the will of Stephen Girard; opened 1848. The original bequest was $8,000,000; the productive fund now exceeds $12,000,000. The college building, begun in 1833, is a fine example of Greek architecture. Teachers, 62; students, 1,610. No minister of any sect is allowed to teach in the institution, or even to visit it.
