hellebore

(hel’e-bér) [L. hAelleb’or us; Gr. ἐλλέ- Bopos]. A violent gastro-intestinal poison, having hydragogue, cathartic, and emmenagoguc properties. It is sometimes used in mania, amenorrhea, and ascites. American h., veratrum viride. black h., the root of Helleb’or us ni’ger. Dose in powder, 10-20 gr. (0.666-1.333 gm.); of extract, 45 ar. (0.033-0.33 qm.) of fluidextract, 5-15 min. (0.333-1 c.c.). White h., veratrum viride.
