[s. 429] : A town in the province of Fo-kien, China, situated on the coast about 30 Station of the CMS miles N. E. of Fu-chau. (1889), with (1903) 31 native workers, 12 day schools, and 1,021 profe ed Christians, of whom 318 are communicants. Station also of the CEZ (1893), with (1903) 3 women mi ionaries, 3 native workers, 6 day schools, 2 boarding Station scliools, 1 dispensary and 1 hospital. also of the Mi ion to Lepers in India and the and a home for East (1891), with 1 chapel untainted children of lepers. Died at San LOOMIS, August us W. He first went as Francisco, Cal., July 26, 1891. a mi ionary of the Presbyterian Board (N.) to China in 1844, and was there until 1850. In 1852 he began mi ion work among the Creek In Indians, and was with them about a year. 1859 he was called to take charge of the Chinese work in California, in which department of Christian mi ions he spent the remainder of his life. Dr. Loomis published several important works in connection with Chinese mi ions, and his whole work has been of the highest value. He was a man of great intellectual attainments, and his Board will find it difficult to supply his place: in their mi ionary force. 429
