Charles Stuart, an American naval officer, born in New Brunswick, N. J., Jan. 28, 1811; entered the mavy in 1826; served on_ the “Princeton” in the Mexican War; was a igned to the gunboat “ Vas run a” in Farragut’s Gulf Squadron in 1861. In the attack on Forts St. Philip and Jackson, in April, 1862, he destroyed six Confederate gunboats and two rams, and in the =} moments of the fight his own ve el was sunk.
