saxhorn

An improvement in various sizes on the key-bugle and ophicleide, used chiefly in military bands except the tuba (q.v.). Saxhorns are made in the following seven principal sizes (va~ riously named), and are also made a semitone lower than each of the following, the compa of each being given in brackets: Bugles 4 Pistons: 1. Sopranino saxhorn (petit saxhorn, petit bugle a pistons, piccolo in Es. or eb [range a-b’’ flat]). 2. Soprano saxhorn (contralto saxhorn, _bugle-tenor, Fliigelhorn in B or B flat) [g—b’’ flat]. 3. Alto saxhorn (Althorn in Es.) E flat. >,[A-e").5).4.1 Benor =,saxhorn (baryton en stb, Tenor horn in B, Ba fliigelhorn), in B flat [E-b’ flat}. Tubas or bombardons: 1. Ba saxhorn (tuba-ba e en si), Ba tuba, Euphonium, Baryton, Tenor ba in B) in B flat [G—b’ flat], also made in C. 2. Low ba saxhorn (bombardon en mib) in E flat [G, flat-e’ flat], also made in F. 3. Contraba saxhorn (bombardon en sib grave, Kontraba tuba) in B flat [E flat— _b flat], also in C. sax’ophone. A keyed bra instr. single-reeded and mouthed like a clarinet and combining in its tone that of the ’cello, cor anglais and clarinet. It is a transposing instr. written in the G clef, made in six sizes with two keys to each, the compa being nearly three octaves: 1. Sopranino or piccolo or aiguin F and Eb. 2. Soprano in C and Bb. 3. Contralto in F and £p. 4. Tenor in C and Bp. 5. Barytone in F and E>. 6. Ba in C and Bb. Also saxofo’nia, I. sax’otromba.
