[Pref. sarco-, and Gr. koptō = to cut.] Zool.: A genus of Acaride. Sarcoptes (or Acarus ) scabiei digs into the human skin, and produces the itch. Sarcoptes equi (probably Acarus exulcerans , Linn.) infests the horse. sar-cop-tic, a. [SARCOPTES.] Caused by mites of the genus Sarcoptes.
