urogymnus

[Pref. uro-, and Gr. gymnos naked, unarmed.] Ichthy.: A genus of Trygonide (q. v.). Tail long, finle and unarmed with spines; body thickly cov ered with bony tubercles; teeth flattened. Uro gymnus as per rimus , about four or five feet long, from the Indian Ocean, is the only species. Its skin is used for covering shields and the handles of swords and other weapons, its rough surface afford ing a firm grip to the hand.
