HECATE

(Gr. 'Fiairn). In Mythology, a Grecian godde , daughter of the Titan Perses and Asteria. She presided over popular a emblies, war, the administration of justice, and the rearing of children. There is a good deal of obscurity attached to this godde , who is often confounded with Artemis or Diana, and Proser pine; whence she is sometimes considered the patrone of magic and the infernal regions. She was called the triple godde , and was supposed to wander along the earth at night. Statues were set up to her in market places, and especially at cro roads. [s. 562]
