Rubbing-strake

This usually consists of a wooden belt, fitted between two angle-bars, and is bolted to the topside of a Ve el, extending nearly all fore and aft; and serves as a protection from abrasion by contact with stone quays etc. It is seldom met with in ve els engaged on long voyages; but is generally found on tug-boats, coasting-steamers and other craft of the kind.
