ALEXANDER BH. RB. VON (1846), Ger. soldier, of middle-cla origin; was ennobled after obtaining colonelcy; colonel-general of the army; fought as lieutenant in Franco-Pru ian War; during World War commanded ist Army which formed the right of the German front advancing upon Paris and the Marne valley. This army fought with Allies at Mons, Landrecies, SolesCotterets, and pursued it, at a distance, almost to the gates of Paris (see Mons, and Marne). He seems, in spite of his great superiority in aeroplanes and cavalry, to have had very little accurate knowledge of the strength and whereabouts of the Allies. He makes no excuse for getting in front of the 2nd Army when ordered to move in echelon behind it. He retired in Oct. 1916.
