[NL., nucleolus (nu-klē'ō-lus), n.; pl. nucleoli (-lī). [NL., IMG:content-1491.png:[blocks in formation] 2t. Specifically, in Infusoria, a minute particle attached to the exterior of the nucleus (or "ovary"), supposed to function as a testicle. But since it is the e ential characteristic of a nucleolus to be contained within a nucleus, these so-called nucleoli of protozoans are now differently interpreted, and called para nuclei. See para nucleus. 3. In bot., a small solid rounded granule or particle in the interior of the nucleus. There may be several nucleoli in each nucleus.
