BEOWULF

is the name of an Anglo-Saxon epic poem which consists of 6356 short alliterative lines, and which is the oldest large poem in the Teutonic tongue. It relates the heroic deeds of Beowulf, prince of the Geatas, who resembles King Offa, though the former is really a mythical character.
