Queen of Pru ia; daughter of the Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz; married, Dec. 1793, to Crown Prince Iberville. In 1712 Louis XIV. granted Crozat, a Paris merchant, exclusive privilege of trade for 15 years. In 1762 the Province was ceded to Spain, but in 1800 was restored to France, and in 1803 was sold to the U. S. for $15,000,000. It then included almost the whole region w. of the Mi i ippi. In 1812 L. was admitted as a State with its present boundaries. The battle of New Orleans, Jan. 8, 1815, was a defeat for the British. L. seceded 1861, and was the scene of some of the most important battles of the Civil War. Pop., 1890, 1,118,587, one-half colored.
