Channel

Channels, are light pieces of timber, bolted in a fore and alt direction to the topside-planking of a ve el; they serve as outriggers for the chain-plates, to give more spread to the lower-rigging, and backstays. See Plates 6.13 & 14, 13.40 & 46.
