[Span, anchova.] A small fish of the Herring family, but not more than three inches long, caught in vast numbers in the Mediterra¬ nean, and pickled for exportation. The fisher¬ men go out during the night, carrying torches in their boats. The fish see the light, and swim up to the boats in great numbers, when the}' are scooped up with nets.
