Hydraulic Buffer

Device for checking the recoil of heavy guns after being fired. It consists of a wrought-iron or steel cylinder, closed at one end, the other being fitted with a cup and stuffing-box through which a piston-rod IMG:content-0699.png:[graphic] pa es. The piston is perforated with several small holes, and the cylinder is partly filled with oil or water, and securely attached to the platform. When the gun is discharged the carriage, to which the end of the piston-rod is attached, forces the liquid through the piston holes, and thus gradually brings the gun and carriage to rest.
