the sirhilitude of relations between thing and another. In Logie the term signifies of any kind on which an agreement, cannot be founded on induction, may be “ Analogical reasoning... may be to the following formula:—Two things each other in one or more respects; a proposition is true of the one, therefore it true of the other.” Analogical reasoning, though very effective, is often apt to lead the astray, as it is difficult to find a very analogy. The appellation of England as Mother Country,” signifies that there is an between the relations of England and her and those of a mother and her children. Analysis, CHEMICAL. The operations which nece ary to ascertain the chemical structure of come under the head of chemical analy; If we require to know only what substances present, irrespective of quantity, the analysis is qualitative. Thus, to prove the atmosphere of nitrogen and oxygen a qualitative alone would be nece ary. If, however, further require to know how much nitrogen and much oxygen, a quantitative analysis is reee Quantitative analysis is usually subdivided into 134 ( 123 Gravimetric and Volumetric; gravimetric, or weight-anaiysis, being characterised by the use of the balance; and volumetric analysis by the use of graduated ve els for the careful observation of rolumes. Analysis is also termed Jnorganic or Organic, according to the nature of the substance under inquiry; and organic analysis is furthermore itself divided into Ultimate and Prozimate, according as we attempt to discover the ultimate elements which are present, or those groups of elements which are known as proximate principles. In the case of complex organic substances an ultimate analysis is often quite usele . With blood, for instance, it would be meaningle to ascertain how much carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen were present; it is first nece ary, by the methods of proximate analysis, to split the blood up into albumin, fibrin, fat, hemoglobin, mineral salts, etc. We may then apply the methods of ultimate analysis to these isolated individual substances if we will. Analysis, MATHEMATICAL. [MATHEMATICS.] Analyst, PuBLic. [ADULTERATION.] Anam, or ANNAM, a country, sometimes called an empire, which occupies the E. portion of the aia ae that forms the S.E. extremity of Asia, ying between lat. 9° 40’ and lat. 23° N. China bounds it on the N. and Siam on the W. It is made up of the provinces of Tonquin to the N., Cochin China to the 8.E., and Cambodia to the S.W.; Laos being sometimes included. ‘The French have a footing in these territories at Tonquin in the north, and in Cochin China at the southern extremity. A range of mountains runs along the coast, and the river Mekong or Cambodia holds a allel course. The aren is 106,000 square miles. he soil is rich on the whole and well watered, producing sugar, pepper, teak, sandalwood, cotton, and silk, The mineral wealth is very large. Various independent sovereignties have existed and still exist within this area; but China claimed a suzerainty over all, The French in 1795 began a policy of interference, chiefly on mi ionary grounds, which led ultimately to their occupation of Cochin China in 1860-2.: ce, by the treaty of Hué in 4884, practically obtained a protectorate over the whole country, which was recognised by China in the treaty of Tien-Tsin, 1885.
