COLUMBUS

CHRISTOPHER, the explorer, was born in 1435. went to sea at an early age, and navigated apparently all parts of the Mediterranean, and some of the coasts beyond the Straits of Gibraltar. In 1493 he reached San Salvador, which Columbus believed to be India all his life, and hence the American natives were mistakenly called Indians, lie a.so discovered Cuba, St. Domingo, and other West India Islands. He went four voyages anti then his health gave way, and he died in 1506.
