Thus, to strike amain is to lower or let fall the topsails, in token of surrender. To wave amain is to make a signal to a ve el to strike its topsails. Amain is also a term used in letting down a thing into the hold or elsewhere, or in lowering a yard, or the like, to denote that the sailors are to let go that part of the rope which they held before, and let down the thing easily and by degrees.
