(grüb.) [From A. S. gra ban, to dig.] (Zool.) The worm or maggot produced from a beetle, which afterwards becomes a winged insect. (groo'ěl.) [Fr. gru au.) (Dietetics.) The Crane fam., comprising very large birds which have the head more or le bare, and the toes connected by a basal membrane. They inhabit dry plains. The Sandhill Crane, or Brown Crane, Grus Can a dens is, of the Mi i ippi valley, is 48 inches long, and the wings 22 inches. It is exceedingly 3 wary, and its sight and hearing are acute. The Crowned Crane, Balearica pavonia (Fig.367,) ofW.Africa, is abt. the same size. Its voice imitates thre sound of a trumpet. [s. 427]
