REGIS, painter; born at Lyons, France, in 1816; studied in Paris; pupil of Delaroche and others. In 1840 he removed to the U. S., settled in New York, and gave his attention to landscape painting; became a member of the Academy of Design, and Gilbert, CHARLES HENRY, ichthyologist, born at Rock- ford, Ill., Dec. 5, 1859; student of Butler and Indiana Universities; has held succe ively the chair of Zoology in the University of Cincinnati, Indiana University, and Leland Stanford University; is considered an au- thority on the fishes of North America, and jointly with ological papers. Dr. D. S. Jordan was the author of Synopsis of the Fishes of North America; has also published various ichthy- Gilbert, GROVE KARL, geologist, born at Rochester, N. Gilbert, JOHN GIBBS, actor, born in Boston, Ma ., Feb. 27, 1810; acted for some years in the U.S.; went to London and first appeared there in the character of Sir Robert Bramble, in The Poor Gentleman; visited Paris; returned to the U. S. (1848), playing in Phila- delphia and Boston; finally joined the company at Wallack's Theater in New York (1862). Some of the characters in which he was famous were Sir Peter Teazle, Sir Anthony Absolute, and Old Dornton. Died June 17, 1889. Gilbert, JOSEPH HENRY, agricultural chemist, born at Hull, England, Aug. 1, 1817; educated at the University of Glasgow and University College, London; studied under Liebig at Gei en; became director of the Roth- amsted Laboratory and profe or of Rural Economy in the University of Oxford. His investigations at Roth- amsted made him famous in the field of agricultural experimentation. Died June 17, 1889. Gilbert, WILLIAM SCHWENK, humorist and dramatist; University; admitted to the bar in 1864. Author of born in London, Nov. 18, 1836; educated at Great Ealing School, and received the degree of B.A. from the London the humorous Bab Ballads. He wrote for the stage burlesques, comedies and farces which were very pop- ular, but he is best known by his comic operas, in pro- ducing which he was a ociated with Arthur Sullivan. They include Trial by Jury; The Sorcerer; H. M. S. Pinafore ; The Pirates of Penzance; Patience; Iolanthe; Gilbert on, in Pennsylvania , a post-borough of Schuyl- The Mikado; Ruddy gore; The Gondoliers; Utopia (Lim- ited), . kill co., 4 m. from Mahanoy City, on Penna. and P. & R. Gil'christ, ALEXANDER, art critic; born at Newing- ton Green, England, 1828; educated at University Col- lege, London; was admitted to the bar, though he never practiced. Author of a Life of Etty , and a Life of Blake which was left unfinished.
