Condition in which the presence of undue amounts of uric acid and urates, or derivatives of the first, as xanthin or hypo xanthin, in the system gives rise to headache, pains in the joints and muscles, secretion of highly irritating urine, indigestion and troublesome eruptions. The tendency is inherited and the condition itself may be followed by gout, of which it is in reality a mild form. The diet should contain little starchy food and the elimination of the uric acid, etc., should be promoted by free drinking of water and the use of alkalies, especially the lithium salts all forms of alcohol are usually harmful.
