CARINA

(Lat. carina, the keel qf a boat.) In Botanical language, is the sharp thin bark of any organ; the back of a leaf folded up if thin and sharp, the winged rim that occupies the back of certain fruits, the sliarpbacked part of a glume or bract, all bear this name. It is also applied to the two anterior petals of a Papilionaceous flower, which adhere by their lower edges into a body something like a boat. [s. 209]
