a small island com: manding the entrance to Manila bay, P. I. It is 3 miles long by 1 mile wide, rising abruptly from the sea tc a height of 635 feet. There is a lighthouse at the summit. The island was strongly fortified by the Spaniards ir the 18th century, but the defenses were not kept up. When Admiral agg made his dash into Manila bay, May 1, 1898, he steamed past this island, which was supposed to be very strongly fortified, and the base of operations for the mines and torpedoes with which the bay was declared to be thickly strewn. The forts have been strengthened by the United States government, which established an arsenal here in 1900. Pop. (1900) about 2,000.
