(1836-1910), soldier and civil engineer. 5. in Campbell county, Virginia. Entered regiment under J. E. B. Stuart; major general of the army of Northern Virginia in 1864. He refused to surrender at Appomattox and slipping through the Federal lines tried to organize troops, and was made a prisoner of war. In 1868 he was a istant engineer of the Pittsburgh and Connellsville railroad, with the North Pacific railroad 1870; chief engineer of construction 1871, chief engineer Canadian Pacific road 1881. In the Spanish-American War he commanded a volunteer brigade. INA (1830-94), Eng. poete ; dau. of Gabriele Ro etti and sister of D. G. Ro etti (¢.v.); published Goblin Market 1862; and Sing-Song, 1872.
