Mazarin, JULES

1602-1661. French statesman of Italian origin; Cardinal 1641. He succeeded Richelieu 1642, inheriting his policy and power. His arbitrary measures excited the Fronde wars, and he was forced to resign twice, but found in Chandler's Encyclopedia dispensable. He secured the interests of France in the Peace of Westphalia 1648, but his internal administration was inefficient.
