Benzol

{ben’-zol) [benzoin], C6H6. A hydrocarbon formed by the dry distillation of organic substances, but in commerce chiefly derived from coal-tar. It is inflammable, volatile, and a solvent for fats. It is employed externally as a parasiticide; internally, as a pulmonary antiseptic, in influenza, and in trichiniasis. Its vapor is used in whooping-cough. Dose gtt. v-x (0.32-0.65). 144
