Eustis

James Biddle, an Amer: ican diplomatist; born in New Orleans, La., Aug. 27, 1834; was edurated in Brook line, Ma ., and at the Harvard Law School; was admitted to the bar in 1856 and practised in New Orleans till the Civil War broke nut. He entered the Confederate army and served as ‘mg aaa on the staffs of Generals Magruder and J. E. Johnston till the close of the war. He then resumed practice in his mative city. He was elected Unite¢ States Senator to fill a vacancy ir 1876, but was not given his seat_ til! late in 1877; was Profe or of Civil Law in the University of Louisiana ir Ale he was again elected Senator. _In March, 1893, he was ap- = United States minister tc rance, and on the expiration of his term, in 1897, resumed practice in New York city. He died in Newport.
