Hartford

Capital of Conn., on the Conn.; settled 1635, chartered as a city 1784; sole capital 1665-1701, and since 1873; jointly with New Haven 1701-1873. It contains Trinity Coll., a theol. sem., important life and fire insurance companies, manufactories of small arms and edged tools. Pop., 1890, 53,230. Hartford Convention. A emblage of Federalist delegates held at Hartford, Conn., Dec. 15, 1814-Jan. 5, 1815. The main object was the defense of the n.e. States against what were thought to be encroachments of the other States and of the general Government; the immediate cause of the difficulties was the War of 1812, which had destroyed the prosperity of New England. Its proceedings were secret, and its designs were at the time regarded as treasonable.
