PIPE

A wine measure, usually containing 105 (very nearly) imperial, or 126 wine gallons. Two pipes, or 210 imperial gallons, make a tun. But, in practice, the size of the pipe varies according to the description of wine it contains. Thus, a pipe of port contains 138 wine gallons, of sherry 130, of Lisbon and Bucellas 140, of Madeira 110, and of Vidonia 120. The pipe of port, it is to be observed, is seldom accurately 138 gallons, and it is usual to charge what the ve el actually contains. [s. 950]
