(1) Term in Gk. rhetoric for suspension of discourse, in order to addre a person present, and ultimately applied to such addre ; hence Hng. application to pa ionate invocation of any kind. (2) Sign used to denote omi ion of letter, as in po e ive case where original vowel of inflection has been omitted.
