(shem.) (Script.) The eldest of Noah's three sons, was the progenitor of one of the three great divisions of mankind, called from him Shemitic or SEMITIC, q. v. Shem lived 600 years, and if the ordinary chronology is to be depended on, he must have been many years contemporary with Abraham. [s. 820]
